Hawaii International Film Festival Advances Cultural Exchange, Draws Visitors and Residents

Each year, festival fans and movie-goers rejoice at the announcement of Hawaii’s famed film festival, the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF). Established in 1981, the festival presents emerging films from Asia and the Pacific, as well as top films from other film festivals from more than 45 countries, helping to enrich, enlighten and broaden support for Asian and Pacific films. With multiple screening sites on six Hawaiian Islands, the premier international film festival draws an audience of more than 80,000 visitors and residents.

The HTA is a proud sponsor of this year’s 31st Annual HIFF, recognizing the festival as an opportunity that showcases the diversity and culture of our islands. Festivals such as HIFF provide residents and visitors with activities, events and opportunities that reflect the fabric of our community offering unique experiences for participants.

This year’s HIFF will be held from Oct. 13-23 at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium. Hotel sponsors this year include the Halekulani, Starwood Hotels in Waikiki, Hotel Renew and the Waikiki Parc Hotel. The Festival’s centerpiece presentation, PINA 3D, is a feature-length dance film featuring the unique and inspiring art of the late great German choreographer, Pina Bausch.

DIACRITICALS

HawaiiTourismAuthority.org recognizes the use of diacritical markings of the (modern) Hawaiian language including the `okina [`] or glottal stop and the kahakō [ō] or macron (e.g., in place names of Hawai`i such as Lāna'i). However, you may notice these diacritical markings have been omitted throughout the website to ensure the best online experience for our visitors. HawaiiTourismAuthority.org recognizes the importance of using these markings to preserve the language and culture of Hawaii and respectfully uses them in all communications beyond the online platform.
